The 8th Brigade has had, and is having, a fairly busy schedule this month. Camp-674 in Moultrie has been involved with numerous festivals in the area. Among these are the Cotton Festival in Berlin, the P-Nut Festival in Sylvester, and of course the Agricultural EXPO in Moultrie. The Moultrie Camp also has a new Commander. 1Lt. Commander Jason Bullard was appointed Camp Commander by the outgoing (resigning) Camp Commander, Jack Bridwell. 2Lt. Commander Phil Fitch was nominated and elected by acclamation to fill the 1Lt. Commander's post, and Camp Quartermaster Pete Cowart was nominated and elected by acclamation to fill the 2Lt. Commander's post. Members of the Moultrie Camp also participated in the headstone dedication at Kimball U.M.C., Anderson City, Georgia for Pvt. W. A. Ricks, Co-D, 10th Ga Battalion, Worth Rebels. Pvt. Ricks is the ancestor of the Moultrie Camp's Newsletter editor, Compatriot Mike Ricks.Upcoming events include the "Lean-Ox" Festival in Lenox, Georgia, the Moultrie Christmas Parade, the Fall Car Show at Spence Field, and the "McNeil Mile" roadside trash pickup... The Berrien County Minutemen in Nashville, Georgia have been busy repairing the fire damage to their meeting lodge. Commander Don Futch reports that with the new aluminum roof, they're about ready to return to their old meeting hall. Members of the Nashville Camp also participated in the P-Nut Festival in Sylvester, Saturday, 18 October, 2008. Commander Futch says the Camp's just about finished with dues collection, and wants all the Camps to know the Minutemen are always ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed... Camp-693 in Sylvester was a major actor in the recent P-Nut Festival. Under the leadership of Camp Commander Russ Ottens, the Sylvester Camp, with support from surrounding Camps, made an impressive and noisy addition to the annual parade. The Ladies of the local Order of Confederate Rose and Bridwell's Southern Belles (OCR), rounded out the entry. The Sylvester Camp has been busy placing the 4X8 recruiting signs in strategic locations in the Worth County area. An event that went unrecognized last June 14th, was the headstone dedication for Pvt. Theophilus Davis, Co-G, 20th Regt, S. C. Infantry. Pvt. Davis had lain in an unmarked grave in Paulk's Chapel Cemetery in Scooterville, Georgia since his death in 1925. His grave would probably have remained unmarked if it hadn't been for his GG Grandson in New Jersey finding out about him and contacting the Sylvester Camp. In conjunction with the Davis Family Reunion, the men of the Sylvester Camp placed a government headstone and planted a Cross of Honor at his grave. Well done men!... The Jeff Davis Cowboys, Camp-682 from Ocilla have been busy gearing up for the upcoming re-enactment at Irwinville's Jeff Davis State Park on November 7th, 8th, & 9th, 2008. They're planning living history camp sites, battles, exhibits, food, and period Church Services. They've also been getting ready for the Sweet Potato Festival on Saturday, October 25th. They plan to have a booth at the Festival, and marchers in the parade. Commander During also reports they've signed up a new recruit. Keep up the good work!... W.D. Mitchell Camp-163 out of Thomasville is also getting ready for a large annual event, the Thomasville Victorian Christmas, December 11th and 12th. As usual, they'll have a living history camp site downtown, then on the 13th, they'll be working with the Salvation Army Bell Ringing. Their September meeting was taken up with a planning session, and in lieu of the October meeting, they'll be having their Annual Fall Cookout at Camp Commander Chip Bragg's home... Camp 2115 in Boston has been dealt a crushing blow. After having secured land for what promised to be a very large re-enactment event (approx. 800 reenactors), a co-owner of the land reneged on the agreement, and the event had to be scrubbed. A real heart breaker. Best wishes to Commander Lightsey and the hard workers of the Boston Camp. Report submitted by Charlie Parks, 8th Brigade Commander |
